long ago and far away i was in a rock and roll band. it was a lot of fun, a wonderful life experience, and still affects me today. we started out as an acoustic duo. i ran into a friend of mine while waiting in line for phish tickets and he had just moved back from florida. we got together and jamed. it was magic right from the start. in a short time we had a bunch of songs together. we even wrote a few tunes. the first was heather. a melancholy song about loss. brian was friends with a bartender that worked at funky, artsy bar in lenox, massachusetts called the village inn tavern. she agreed to let us play. the first night we sat on stools and played our hearts out (we had no p.a. - just brian singing and me playing). we soon picked up a p.a., turned the village into a regular gig and refined the sets. i was in college at the time and met a guy named nelson. he was a fantastic bass player. i told him if he could find a drummer, we'd get together and have a band. 3 months later, nelson comes back and proclaims, "i have found a drummer!" enter: matt bacolli. hell of a drummer. we practiced in the basement of my mom's house on tuesday nights and played anywhere we could. we even had our own 5th member/very helpful mover of equipment/provider of moral support/applause generator/fellow drinker of guinness: patience (aka pashalu, peg, pash, etc), who sang her heart out on our breaks (instead of the cheesy taped music... isn't a hot chick with an amazing voice singing great tunes better?) brian and i went on tour as caterers in the summer of 97, and when we came back, we had grand plans of moving to a larger area, recording a full album, and parlaying our contacts from the road into a career. the band fell apart shortly after we got back. we had a yoko ono that matt and nelson didn't like much, and they felt like their voice wasn't coming through on a number of levels, and so they quit the band and moved to minnesota. brian lost interest, and then tusk was history... we played our farewell concert in the fall of 97 at la cocina.
